Hymn of the Month: December

I guess I could pick any amazing Christmas carol or hymn for this post, but this seems a bit more appropriate for the month of December. This month it's easy to be overwhelmed with material possessions. Things we want, things we need, things we wish we could afford. This hymn makes you stop and think. Evaluate your heart. Ask yourself, "What would I rather have?" and are my actions reflecting that truth? It made me stop, anyway. :)

I'd Rather Have Jesus

I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands,
I’d rather be led by His nail pierced hand.

Than to be a king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway,
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.

I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;
I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than world-wide fame,
I’d rather be true to His holy name.

He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;
He’s sweeter than honey from out of the comb;
He’s all that my hungering spirit needs,
I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead.

YouTube FAIL!! I will not post some sappy, geeked out slide show on this blog and I can't handle the "modern" renditions of this song. Google Alison Krauss "I'd rather have Jesus" if you want to know what it sounds like. ;)

I was thinking of your hymn of the months posts recently after we sung this in church (was thinkin of copying ya). Great hymn of the month for December.

Speaking of December and materialism, check out this blog post (read it last night) and links in the post: http://www.generationcedar.com/main/2010/11/re-thinking-christmas.html
